Faithful in the In-Between

There are seasons in life when we have a clear understanding of where we're going and what we're working toward. We have goals, plans, and a sense of direction that helps us make decisions about what comes next. But there are also seasons when things aren't quite as clear. Maybe something you've been praying about hasn't happened yet, a plan you were confident in has changed, or you're simply trying to understand what God is asking of you next.
These in-between seasons can be difficult because we're often more comfortable when we can see progress or understand how things are unfolding. We want to know that we're moving in the right direction and that the decisions we're making will lead somewhere meaningful.
But what happens when you don't have those answers? How do you remain faithful when you're not entirely sure what comes next?
Faithfulness Isn't Always About Moving Forward
When we think about faithfulness, we often associate it with remaining committed, following through, and continuing to do what we've been called to do. While those things are important, faithfulness isn't always demonstrated through constant movement or visible progress. Sometimes being faithful means continuing to do something even when the results aren't immediately apparent. Other times, it means recognizing that God may be leading you in a different direction than you originally expected.
There can be a tendency to believe that if we've committed to something, we have to keep pursuing it exactly as we planned. But remaining faithful to God and remaining committed to our own expectations aren't necessarily the same thing. A change in direction doesn't always mean you've failed or given up. Sometimes it means you're becoming more attentive to what God is showing you and willing to make adjustments along the way. Faithfulness requires more than determination. It also requires discernment, trust, and a willingness to remain open to God's direction.
Learning to Trust What You Cannot See
One of the challenges of an uncertain season is that we often want reassurance before we're willing to take the next step. We want to know how things will work out, whether we're making the right decision, and how long we may have to wait before something changes.
But trusting God doesn't mean we'll always have that level of certainty. Proverbs 16:9 reminds us that while we make plans for our lives, the Lord establishes our steps. It's a reminder that planning and trusting God aren't opposing ideas. We can be thoughtful and intentional about where we're going while recognizing that He may lead us somewhere different.
That can be difficult, especially when we've invested time, energy, and resources into something we believed was part of our future. It's not always easy to release our expectations or accept that the path may look different from what we imagined. Yet part of growing in faith is learning that we don't have to understand every detail to continue trusting the One who does. This doesn't mean ignoring uncertainty or pretending we never have questions. It means allowing ourselves to seek God's wisdom, acknowledge what we don't know, and continue responding to what He reveals.
Being Faithful in Your Current Season
Sometimes we're so focused on getting to the next season that we overlook the value of the one we're currently in. We may be waiting for a new opportunity, a relationship to change, a business to grow, a goal to become reality, or simply a clearer understanding of what God wants us to do. And while there's nothing wrong with looking forward to what's ahead, we can become so consumed with waiting that we forget there's still life to be lived right now.
Faithfulness invites us to consider what God has placed before us in this season, even if it isn't the season we expected or hoped for. There may be relationships that need our attention, responsibilities that require care, gifts that can continue to be developed, or opportunities to serve that we haven't fully recognized. There may also be lessons we're learning about patience, boundaries, trust, or the way we respond when things don't go according to plan.
Not every season will produce something we can easily measure, but that doesn't mean nothing meaningful is happening. Sometimes the growth taking place within us is just as important as the progress we're hoping to see around us.
Faithfulness Requires Room for God to Lead
One thing I've learned is that it can be easy to ask God to guide our plans while still holding tightly to how we believe those plans should unfold. We pray for direction, but sometimes we've already decided what the answer should look like. We ask Him to open doors, but struggle when the opportunity that comes doesn't resemble what we expected. We want to trust His timing, but become discouraged when things seem to be taking longer than we anticipated. Faithfulness challenges us to examine whether we're truly remaining open to God's direction or simply asking Him to confirm our own. That doesn't mean we shouldn't have desires, set goals, or make plans. Those things can be meaningful parts of living intentionally. But our plans should leave room for God to redirect us, change our perspective, or show us that something we once pursued may no longer be where He's leading.
Sometimes faithfulness looks like taking action, and sometimes it looks like having the patience to wait. Other times, it may require surrendering something we've become attached to so we can respond to what God is doing now. The challenge is learning to recognize the difference rather than assuming faithfulness will always look the same.
What Does Faithfulness Look Like for You Right Now?
As we move closer to the end of the year, it's natural to reflect on what we've accomplished, what hasn't happened, and what we still hope to see change. For some, this season may bring excitement about what's ahead. For others, it may bring questions about why certain things haven't unfolded the way they expected. Wherever you find yourself, remember that faithfulness isn't measured only by what you accomplish or how much progress you can see.
There is value in remaining attentive to God, continuing to grow, honoring the responsibilities in front of you, and being willing to follow His direction even when it requires something different from what you planned.
You don't have to force yourself into the next season or have every question answered before you can live faithfully in this one. As you reflect on where you are right now, consider what God may be asking of you in this season. Is there something you need to continue nurturing? A decision you've been avoiding? An expectation you need to release? Or an area where you simply need to trust Him more? Faithfulness doesn't require having the entire path figured out. It requires a willingness to keep seeking God and responding to His direction as He reveals it.
What would it look like for you to remain faithful right where you are, even if the next step isn't completely clear?
